Escape to Tranquillity: Azure Boutique Resort Getaway (Review)

I arrived excitedly at Azure Boutique Resort after embarking on a coach and plane journey. This not-so-hidden gem provided a special refuge from the everyday grind. The moment I stepped into the resort’s oasis, I felt refreshed by the atmorsphere. This experience was relaxing and made me think of all the things I want when on a solo trip like this one.

On a solo getaway:

1) I want to go far from my comfort zone

I set out on this solitary retreat. I just love the disconnection from my daily life and stepping beyond the comfortable boundaries of home. I looked forward to experiencing a different culture, enjoying the rush of exploring unexplored ground and the independence that comes with being far from home on this journey beyond the familiar. When you see me with this blue bag, I mean business. I did a 15hr drive and 2 hour flight to get to this place. On such a long trip, reading a book from my collection came in handy.

2) Getting to enjoy the country side scenery

Tanzania is home to beautiful landscapes. It has picturesque scenes and travelling by road is the greatest way to fully appreciate these landscapes. I was captivated by the stunning view of Tanzania’s natural beauty as I sat comfortably by the window. I was able to appreciate the landscape, from plains to hills. Road travel enabled this connection with the environment and fostered an appreciation for the country’s scenic treasures.

3) Having a big bed to myself

Azure Boutique Resort was just the right place for me to unwind. I especially loved the comfy double bed that offered me the rest I needed. The luxurious bedding enveloped me. It was a place of relaxation as well as of recovery. The worries and cares of my everyday life seemed to vanish. The simple but beautiful facilities and the thoughtfulness with which the room was furnished enhanced the whole experience and produced the ideal atmosphere for relaxing. With its focus on comfort and peace, the resort became my haven.

4) I want to enjoy delicious meals with a view

Beautiful scenery has a special power to calm tired minds. A wonderful dining experience was created by the combination of the beauty of the surroundings, the rhythm of the waves, and the close proximity to the Indian Ocean. The spotless beach was a perfect place for unwinding. It provided a peaceful haven to enjoy my delicious plate of food. Public beaches have their magic but I just wanted to enjoy peace and my ”own” place for a moment. I shared my food with the birds that could not just let me rest until they had a taste of the chef’s special. For all the foodies out there, Azure Boutique Resort offers so much at breakfast time that you will eat your fill. Never walk out with food packed. Not allowed.

5) Burn those holiday calories

According to my theory, being healthy is more than just eating right; it’s also about the interaction between our energy intake and our activities. Although I personally dislike dieting, I firmly believe that everyone should engage in regular exercise. My experience at Azure Boutique Resort was enlightening and perfectly matched my wellness philosophies. The resort offered an atmosphere that not only promoted physical activity but also blended it into the experience.

6) Owning that beach

Part of unwinding process for certain individuals requires some level of silence from our immediate environment. Azure Boutique Resort offers a private beach. I woke up as early as 5am, to enjoy the morning breeze at the beach and all the times I was there, I was amazed at its beauty. Afternoons at the beach were times when the ocean would “go away” but this was equally amazing as this is something I have not experienced coming from a landlocked country.

7) What I didn’t like:

Since not all goes our way all the time, there was something I didn’t quite like. There was a drainage problem in the shower that caused me movements from one room to another upon request.Hopefully, this has been dealt with as not all customers will end at just a small critique on their blog. All-in-all, this place should be given a 3.5 out of 5 for being a place that is suitable for a getaway.

A Day-Tripper’s Tale in Walvis Bay

It’s worthwhile to visit Namibia if Walvis Bay is on your bucket list. It is nestled between the cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the dunes of the Namib Desert. It’s a seaside city with plenty to see and do. Its location makes any trip you take more enjoyable.

Because of Walvis Bay’s natural beauty, visitors are welcome to explore its coastal treasures. The sound of the waves will welcome you as you approach Walvis Bay. What sort of fun can one have in this town without spending a night? One of the advantages of doing day-trips to a different town is that there isn’t much planning needed.

I didn’t do much research on this. I was just advised to try a day trip there. I got up from my bed in a town called Swakopmund and decided to do a day trip. I had my breakfast and set off.

There was a certain element of spontaneity to my journey because I decided not to plan everything out beforehand. Every corner revealed something new.

I was engrossed in the allure of unplanned stops and breathtaking scenery. Although my day started early in Swakopmund, I loved the experiences along the way. This included the weather which was cool.

I was about 40 minutes away from Walvis Bay. I was excited because this was gonna be my first time to this town. The next time I try a day trip to a different town, I should plan a weekend getaway.

It was easy to find transport to Walvis Bay from Swakopmund. I am happy to be among early birds. By this I mean, I don’t struggle to get up early. I owe that to my early nights. Getting up early for this trip was not a problem. In no time, I was in Walvis Bay. I made it before 9 O’Clock.

I wanted to start my day with some coffee and cake. I already had breakfast in Swakopmund but with me, there is always room for cake. I found a prefect place with an ocean view. Protea Hotel.

The smell of freshly brewed coffee welcomed me as soon as I walked in. The smiling staff made me feel very welcome. The soothing sound of the waves in the background added to the interior’s cosy vibe.

I sat at an inside table first, then moved outside to enjoy the tables outside and take in the amazing view of the ocean. My taste buds celebrated the rich flavour of my coffee as I sipped it. This went perfectly with the rich slice of cake.

My morning treat craving was satisfied by Protea Hotel, in Pelican Bay which also offered a peaceful environment, making it an unforgettable beginning to my day.

Before leaving for my next stop, I rested outside the hotel enjoying the Atlantic Ocean. This is the beauty with day trips. They provide flexibility. This enables one to tailor their itinerary to specific interests and preferences. I loved just sitting outside Protea Hotel enjoying the fresh morning breeze. I could have called it a day but decided on something else I was gonna do here.

Because of my love for walks, I did a 30 minute walk to see what was around. I then came back to a spot I could watch pelicans. Watching birds is a relaxing activity. I didn’t come with enough to feed them. They were not all over my case because of that. Besides, had I come with too much fish, they were going to disturb me.

I spent some time feeding the pelicans with the little I carried. Just as well it was almost lunch.It was a peaceful atmosphere of the beach. With a bag of fish in hand, I watched in awe as the pelicans danced with the water. These feeding time created a special bond between us. Every fish I tossed was greeted with happy screams.

The beauty with being in Walvis Bay is that pelicans aren’t the only things to see. After leaving this place I thought getting up close and personal with the Atlantic Ocean was a perfect idea. I went to the Laramon Tours Catamarn Cruise offices and checked what was offered. I loved their cozy looking cruises.

I was immediately drawn in by the inviting atmosphere and the wide selection of cruise options on show. I was drawn to charm right away because it combined the promise of exploration with the ideal amount of comfort. The office’s knowledgeable staff offered insights into the range of activities, which included dolphin encounters and an exploration of the bay’s abundant marine life. I eagerly reserved a cruise, hoping to see the marvels of the coast.

It was nice to see some “visitors” join in and enjoy the cruise with us. I then realized this “visitor” had motives. There was fresh fish on the cruise which was inviting. I hoped this wouldn’t bring his whole family in. Seals are such interesting creatures. As we continued enjoying this cruise I saw a black space on the ocean. Going on further, it so happened that this visitor of ours was heading to its second home or chill spot. This seal was a freeloader. Free food and transport to its destination.

We found loads of them. I wish I could get closer and play with them but this was the furthest we could go. I must say day trips aren’t that bad. I had seen what I didn’t even plan to see. Spontaneity helped here. Unplanned trips can sometimes turn out good. Do consider a day trip or getaway when on this end.

Lunch experience at a Marriott Hotel

High-end cuisine is usually prepared by talented chefs. Hotel restaurants utilise seasonal and fresh ingredients. This implies that whatever you order, you can count on a tasty and filling meal. You can count on Marriott Hotels for this.

How it all started

Marriott International began as an A and W Root Beer franchise. This was in Washington, D.C., in May 1927. That is when founders J. Willard and Alice Sheets Marriott got their business started. Thirty years after, J.W. Marriott expanded into the lodging business.

In 1989, the Warsaw Marriott, the company’s 500th hotel, opened in Poland. It is the first western-managed hotel in Eastern Europe and the tallest hotel in Warsaw. Marriott International announced its collaboration with hotelier Ian Schrager. It then created EDITION Hotels, a new lifestyle luxury boutique hotel brand.

The brand’s first property opened in Waikiki, Hawaii, in 2010. Later on, Marriott International acquired Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide. This made it the world’s largest hotel company.

Marriott International is at the top of the list. It has been the global leader for seven consecutive years. It is having 31 brands, 8,194 hotels, and over one and a half million rooms in 138 countries. It is the largest hotel chain in the world in 2023!

Experiences in such places often times leaves long-lasting memories. This was another food adventure trip. What is funny is that I went on my own to quench some food desire. I didn’t want home cooked food. I was in for a treat.

Which Marriott Hotel did you dine at?

I decided to do lunch at Protea Hotel in a town called Ndola. This hotel is a Marriott Hotel. I was there to see how they do their lunches. It was a delightful experience. As a Marriott Hotel, the service was top-notch. It created an inviting atmosphere for lunch. The tasteful display of the meal I chose was impressive. This hotel made my lunch outing a memorable and satisfying occasion.

The hotel is keep up to the standards so far. I had to check if the restrooms were as clean as should be. It is safe to say you could enjoy reading a magazine and sip on some soda whilst in there.

The colour theme of the hotel is rich. It has combination of brown, dark chocolate, and cream. Those are a good fit. This was a sophisticated tone. The hotel’s design was well executed by its designers. They must have put much thought into it. You will love the hospitable, aesthetic and pleasant atmosphere. This improved my eating experience in general.

I ordered some fries, a salad, and pork. My order sounds ordinary yet it was tasty. I choose to savour a beautiful blend of flavours for my lunch. The salad presented a cool blend of veggies. My order’s star was the delicate pork, which was cooked to a deliciously soft texture.

The mixture called “Rocky Shady” turned out to be a nice surprise. It was expertly prepared with the ideal ratio of ingredients. The drink’s flavours merged to create a pleasant combination. This drink’s mixology revealed the bartender’s skill. I must say the 45 minutes drive from where I was to this place was worthwhile.

The beauty about Africa is that you could have such a meal with a $20 on you. I could have had lunch elsewhere but once in a while, a little pampering does not hurt. The hotel has lovely accomodation and it was not necessary to spend time there.This will be an experience for another day. When you find yourself in this part of the country, do stop by even just for a dining moment like I did. You will get refreshed by the serene environment.

How to rock Zambian food tourist-style

People travel for different reasons. Some do it for the sake of quenching gastronomic desires. This is among my favorite things to do. Some foodies are passionate travelers who don’t limit themselves. They seek out many cuisines.

Foodies embark on a never-ending mission to please their cravings. They have no fear of searching out unusual ingredients and advanced cooking methods. They try foods with old-fashioned recipes passed down through generations. Food holds the ability to exceed language barriers. It also fosters connections between individuals from different backgrounds.

You will get to sample a wide variety of cuisines when you travel to most of the Southern African countries. You will find all sorts of foods in the lively street food vendors and bustling markets. For example, you can savor a savory braai in South Africa. Their take on barbecue. Imagine tender meats marinated in a mixture of spices! They’re cooked well thanks to skillful grilling. This would go well with some delicious side dishes.

Namibia as another example, is a country that has distinct food customs. You may get a taste of its rich traditional foods like potjiekos. This is a slow-cooked stew cooked in a cast-iron pot. Plus, you could have biltong, a sort of dried and cured meat. Most southern African countries offer unique tastes. These will offer experience that will please even the pickiest eater.

Venturing further north to Zambia, don’t miss the chance to try nshima. This is a staple food made from maize meal. This thick and filling dish is often paired with relishes called ndiyo. As a tourist in Zambia, take your food journey to another level. There is no time for that waitress to explain to you what you will be eating. This article will do that for you.

Hygiene is very important. I must add that some restaurants should up their game in this area. Other restaurants are a no-go area because of this. I went to a local food restaurant called Harriet’s. This restaurant is in the tourist capital of the country. It has tourists frequenting it. Blend in with us by being a step ahead. Know those local dishes to enhance your experience of a different culture.

Some of these local restaurants are indoors. Most of these kinds of restaurants also have outdoor settings. This is ideal in most seasons except in the wet and cold seasons. As you have your local meal, you can enjoy street and city views.

What is Zambia’s staple food?

Zambia’s staple food is nshima. This is like potatoes. The difference is that mashed potatoes are on the fluffy side. Some Zambians, especially our male folk may amaze you with their love for nshima. I met these tourists who commented on the same. They felt their Zambian friends they made whilst staying here idolize this nshima. I had to tell them why it is so.

Most men here who have physical jobs need to fill up their stomachs well. Nshima fills up your stomach so that you don’t have to think of other meals for many hours. These men mock foods like pasta to be ‘bird food’ that won’t do wonders for your tummy.

This nshima is not eaten how you would mashed potatoes. I have had mashed potatoes with nothing else. The taste is okay because of spice, margarine, or butter. You cannot have nshima on its own. It tastes flat. Nshima goes with relishes like fish, meats, and veggies.

What accompaniments go with nshima?

When it comes to accompaniments, it is up to what you would want. Real foodies are adventurous so try fighting the picky side of you. You can have nshima with fish which is fresh or what you call dry. ‘Dry’ because of the process it goes through. This is something like smoked chicken. Some love their fish that way. This means you buy the dried fish but still boil it after. The most common fish we have is bream. It is usually fried and some like it in gravy. Some want the gravy prepared on its own.

You could also have nshima with T-bone, beef, or chicken stew. There are two types of chickens. The first is the one you would find in a supermarket or butchery. The other type called village chicken has tougher flesh. These are chickens reared by individuals. They eat anything they find like insects, lizards, or fruits. They aren’t reared in a professional way. What is funny is some people prefer a lizard-eating chicken. They claim it is tastier. This is the one you see below. Meat and chicken stews are common even in other countries. In other countries expect to have them with rice or potatoes. What may not be common is a stew that has a combination of chicken feet, liver, gizzards, and intestines. I can’t say I have had this stew. From observations, people love it! I have had chicken livers not as a stew.

I have mine roasted with spices, green pepper, and onions. I hate imagining the intestines of a chicken boiled. If something grosses me out, I would rather have it roasted. I know that being an adventurous foodie means ditching the act of being picky. But I have my limits. Intestines are intestines. They are the passage for poop. If not washed well, then you ate poop.

We have what you call kapenta which is like tiny sardines in tomato and onion sauce. If you wanna blend in with us, call it kapenta. Get to that local food restaurant and ask for nshima with kapenta and veggies of your choice. When it comes to kapenta, expect a seafood aroma. If you don’t like the smell of seafood, you may not like kapenta.

And the veggies?

There is a large variety of veggies to go with your nshima and meats. Zambians love meat! I have met very few vegetarians here. The vegetables we have are rape, impwa, ifisashi, and cabbage (which tends to have fewer greens and I don’t like that). Okra is on the list. It is slimy but my favorite.

There is a liking for some vegetables cooked in peanut butter sauce. This is what I listed as ifisashi. Without peanut butter, one can use pounded groundnuts. This is powder-like instead of paste-like.

How do I eat this nshima? It’s so sticky.

It’s always funny to watch non-locals eat nshima. The struggle is real! Lol! And yes, you can use a fork and knife. The truth is it is not meant to be that way. Hygiene first. Wash thy hands in a thorough way. Pinch that big lump of nshima so that you have a smaller piece. Make that piece into a round shape. Use thy thumb to make a small depression in your ball of nshima. That small depression scoops the accompaniment. Then, enjoy the taste of your food. Bon appetit!

How much?

Prices of local foods are affordable. What is more expensive is nshima with T-bone or fish. This is about 3 to 4 dollars. The rest of the restaurant’s food is below that price range. Vegetarians pay less than this. Consider taking on this journey of local Zambian food.

Travel is a great and transformative experience. It uncovers bliss and bumps. As I make travel plans, I am aware that not all will go as planned. We spend more than 80% of our time thinking about the good things about travel. We get excited to see new places. We sometimes avoid thinking of what might go wrong. The times I have traveled are filled with the good. It is wise to share the bad as well because this isn’t a perfect world. But what have I gone through that is considered a bump?

The Bliss

Making good friends

Traveling is a wonderful experience. It gives us the chance to discover new locations. It helps us engage with diverse cultures, and make lifelong memories. There are chances to meet new people and develop lifelong friendships. This is one of the most priceless parts of any journey.

I thought about my own travel experiences. I got overwhelmed with gratitude. I have met such amazing people. These incredible people have enhanced my experiences. I can call some friends with pride.

Having oysters for the first time

I love food adventure. There are foods that you won’t find in your country. Seafood tends to be more expensive here. It pays to have a coast. I tried oysters first time in Walvis Bay. I heard rumours about them. Rumour has it they are an afrodisiac. I don’t know if that is true. The combination of them with champagne was amazing.

A good first-time review of Couchsurf 

We always have that nervous feeling of trying certain things for the first time. The feeling is worse when it involves staying with total strangers in their space. “What if” questions cloud your mind. I tried this once. I made a profile on Couchsurf and had my doubts. I got offers from some male hosts for example and some would try to be too much in your business. I then looked for family hosts instead of lone ranger hosts. I then stayed with this family. It turned out Couchsurf is not all that bad. I had a full dose of luck! The family was such a cool family. We hang out together and sometimes they let me have my space. I am glad they left this good review of me. I also did.

Meeting someone you know whilst far from home 

We meet lots of people whilst traveling. It’s a whole different situation when you meet someone you know not because you planned it. I was in Johannesburg at Curiocity Backpackers and went down the road for some coffee. I enjoyed it and took a tour around. I found street food displays and decided to help myself. I turned around to have a closer look at the other food stands. I then met a former classmate from high school. Long story short, it turned out to be a fun-packed night driving around town. I ended up crushing at hers. This has happened to me twice. The other person I met looked like they were having a great time with their significant other. I didn’t wanna intrude so I kept the ‘catch up’ to a minimum.

Getting an upgrade, discount or freebie

We all love upgrades, discounts, or freebies. When you book a place to stay, it’s a pleasant surprise to discover you have an upgrade. This one time, I booked a place in a simple-looking chalet next to the Okavango Delta. I only found out that I was gonna get a room upgrade. Another time, I booked many days in a hostel. I was only told when a client books over a certain number of days, they get a room upgrade. You can also enjoy these deals on Booking.com.

Falling in love while travelling

Sometimes I appear ‘tough’ on the outside. And everyone should. It’s necessary to have a facade once in a while. Everyone has a soft spot for something or someone. Falling for someone is not something you plan for like your travel budget. It would be weird if that happened. Travel allows you to meet people. Falling for someone is possible. Plus, it makes the feeling intense if you both love the same things. It’s okay to throw all caution of distance to the wind. Enjoy the feeling until the time reality sets in.

The Bumps

Language Barrier

This must be a problem for many. You are at immigration waiting to know the verdict. You come into contact with that one officer that assumes all Africans speak Swahili. You first let it slide because you think he is joking. He keeps rubbing it in and this tests your patience. After a while, you are not sure whether he is teasing you or he is naive. What’s worse is he does this so everyone can hear. You go your way and go through but it’s like the situation repeats itself elsewhere. I found this to be a problem in East Africa. I have accepted English is not their official language.  At the airports or official places, expect communication in Swahili.

Over-charge the non-local

Expect to buy the same product with a local at a different price. This may not be the case with supermarkets. In a supermarket prices are standard. There are times you want to get yourself some biryani or kebabs from an open food market. The moment you speak English, the sellers experience a “light bulb” moment. This means everything on their stand gets hiked. They have the right to do that because it’s their business. It is a common trend in some countries that puts non-locals off.

Confiscating items at the airport

Sometimes a journey starts with a road trip then you return by air. You forget how half your toiletry bag will be left at inspection. All your medium to large-sized products become donations. This is restricting though we try to understand the rules. This one time I attended a cowboy-themed party. It was an amazing event. I bought a toy gun and it fit well with my costume. I was gonna stash that toy gun in my souvenir-collection bag. I proved to the polite lady I found that it was a toy gun but to no avail. The funniest incident was when I used the airport in Harare, Zimbabwe. This period (don’t know about now) was a time of cash crisis for the country. I was seen counting some Zimbabwe currency. I was approached by a concerned man. He said that the country was already lacking money for me to leave Zimbabwe with their currency.

Meeting horrible persons

We meet all sorts of people when traveling. Some angels, some demons. I once observed an experience during the post-covid period. I was in a hostel with other roommates. There was this unpleasant roommate who thought all his opinions about being jabbed with the vaccine were to be respected. I could tell he offended most roommates and some felt he was bossy. This can be disturbing if you have hopes to enjoy yourself.

Cafes are great locations to relax, take in a warm atmosphere, and have a delicious cup of coffee. For those looking for a break from the daily grind, these lovely spots provide a retreat. Cafes are the ideal setting for deep chats with friends. They provide peaceful moments of isolation because of their laid-back vibe.

These spots are the perfect place to catch up on work, read a compelling book or people-watch. Freshly brewed coffee in the air will tantalize your senses. It will foster a welcoming and cozy atmosphere.

Cafes are places where you can Imagine yourself curled up in a cozy corner. They sometimes have soothing music playing in the background. This is what I walked into at Kubu Cafe. I went there for a conversation. I didn’t realize I was there for two meals and some dessert. I realized it’s enticing to remain for a while and enjoy the experience. This is because of their charming decor, gentle lighting, and plush seats as well.

An excellent cafe should provide its customers with a warm and pleasurable experience. A decent one needs the following things below:

Coffee Quality: Good coffee is the foundation of any cafe. A customer wants a well-made espresso and brewed coffee. They desire a range of premium teas and other beverages. I am not a coffee addict. I could tell the clients around Kubu Cafe were enjoying their coffee. I was enjoying my cappuccino.

Comfy Seats: A variety of comfortable seats create a warm atmosphere for customers. Some individuals might like the cozy embrace of a plush couch. Shared tables offer a unique setting for seating. This setting fosters a feeling of neighborhood and encourages interaction between varied groups.

When I linked up for a chill, I tried the shared table. We stuck around for a while and I ended up on a couch. I must say Kubu Cafe had a variety of seats which makes it an ideal hang-out spot for both individuals and groups.  I even noticed baby seats which means every age group had a seating arrangement.

Wide Range of Menu Options and Considerate Pricing :
Variety is vital when it comes to designing an alluring menu. A cafe should have a wide variety of tastes and dietary needs. This helps customers find something they enjoy. At Kubu Cafe, you will have variety on the menu. What was on their board was not all there was on that day.

There is something for everyone at Kubu Cafe. The food ranged from mouthwatering croissants to savory sandwiches. I enjoyed the colorful salads, and mashed potatoes with a juicy t-bone steak. Going out to eat with someone means you can taste some of their food. My partner in crime at this cafe picked their chicken schnitzel with fries. I must add that it was well-prepared food that needed a signature dessert after. There is nothing that does it for me more than chocolate cake. Yummy…

Charging stations and WiFi: It has become more crucial for businesses to cater for their tech-savvy clients. Today’s world is fast-paced. Wi-Fi and charging stations are an efficient method to improve client experience. Having stuck around Kubu Cafe, we soon were in need of some charging. We didn’t care much about the WiFi because we had ours.

Sufficient Hours of Operation: Cafes should have enough hours of operation. This might influence a business’s success. It can decide to keep later hours or open earlier. This may draw a greater variety of clients. I liked that Kubu Cafe had these hours of operation.

A successful cafe blends hygiene, friendliness, and competent personnel. It is safe to say Kubu Cafe did well in these three areas. I was helped by one staff member who gave recommendations on a book sold there. Cafes may create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages repeat business. So the next time you enter a cafe, enjoy the right atmosphere. I left Kubu Cafe feeling refreshed.

In maintaining and presenting our common cultural history, museums are essential. These magnificent institutions serve as more than just storage facilities for artefacts; they also serve as portals into the past.

When you enter a museum, you will be surrounded by actual reminders of the past. The hardships, victories, and achievements of people who came before us are memorialised in priceless works of art, and historic artefacts.

I had an exciting plan for the day and got up bright and early with eagerness. I was going to the famed Railway Museum in Zambia’s stunning Southern Province. This museum highlights the history of Zambia’s railroads and offering a look at the world of trains in the past.

As I travelled to the museum, I couldn’t help but think about what it must have been like to ride on these locomotives in the past. As soon as I stepped inside, I was in a another time period. including vintage images, models, and actual relics on display.

The collection of steam engines, was one of the museum’s highlights. It was impressive to see these locomotives, with their wheels and brass finishes. These devices, powered by coal and pure mechanical force, had formerly linked towns and communities, aiding trade and transportation.

As I explored further, I discovered an array of exhibits that showcased the various aspects of Zambia’s railway history. I learned about the challenges faced by the early railway pioneers.The museum also shed light on the vital role that trains played in the development of the country, linking remote regions and enabling the transportation of goods and people. It is just disappointing now that the railway companies in Zambia are not doing too good. They could use a facelift.

The History of the Museum

The Railway Museum also known as Zambezi Sawmills Locomotive Sheds after some national reforms that came with the independence of the country, was left abandoned. A monuments commission in the country took over managing it and declared it a national monument. Later on in 1987, after some restoration works, it was opened officially by the first president of the country then.

Some Exhibitions you will find

7th Class Engine Number 70 was built by Neilson, Reid, and Company in 1900, and in Zambia, the original owner was Rhodesia Railways ( Zambia’s former name was Northern Rhodesia). In 1925, it was then purchased by Zambezi Sawmills. It was the first steam locomotive. Some of its routes in those days were Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and Zambia routes. It is the longest-serving steam engine in Zambia.

G Class Number 57 was built by North British Locomotive Company in 1957/8. It was built foe Nigeria Railways and the East African Railway. It was originally owned by Nyasaland (now called Malawi and nicknamed ‘Jubilee’ and was purchased by Zambezi Sawmills in 1970 at a price I found to be so funny now, 322 Kwacha (Zambian Currency) or 16 dollars, then. It was mainly used in construction of the Mulobezi Railway line.

Steam Crane Number 109 built by Cowan Sheldon and Company limited in 1951 and the original owner was Rhodes Railways and the second owner was Zambia Railways. This steam crane also helped in the rescue of two passenger trains that crashed on 17th January, 1996 near a town called Kalomo. A good number of coaches over turned and had a lot of casualties.

How the Steam Engine works Display

As I kept up with my tour, I found this steam train with all sorts of labels showing how it works. From my observation, it appeared like the steam is generated by injecting water into a the boiler from the tank in the tender.

Then the heat energy from the fire box is transferred to the water boiler through the sides of the fire box, tube plates, smoke tubes known as heating surface. Changing water into vapour known as saturated steam is admitted into the internal dry pipe leading to the saturated side of the steam heater header and in the process closing the greasy air valve.

The saturated steam enters the element tubes where it travels twice in each direction. The hot gases passing through the flue tube to the smoke box further heats the saturated steam in the element tubes hence the steam becoming super heated and enters into steam pipes leading to the steam chest and piston valve head. With the valve open, steam enters the cylinders completing its power stroke. The exhausted steam is forced back through the port to the exhaust passage through the blast pipe and cap through the chimney into the atmosphere.

I think the short trip to this museum was worthwhile and I walked away knowledge-packed.
